Five things you learn as a vegetarian single
Being a vegetarian single is not exactly a cakewalk. In fact, one could easily argue that dating could be a lot more difficult when you have specialized dietary and lifestyle choices that are different from the norm. For those who recently made the veggie-friendly switch, you might be in for a shock when you go out on dates with people who are not aware of your dietary choices. Here’s five things we’ve learned as vegetarian singles.1. A vegetarian single can be hard to find when you’re on a standard dating site. There’s a reason why so many people will sign up for vegetarian dating sites when they are on the prowl. The truth is that finding other veggie friendly folks is a lot harder, simply because it often requires a lot more browsing. Sadly, a lot of people love their meat. And, they aren’t going to give it up for a date.
2. People who aren’t vegetarian often will be really rude towards a vegetarian single. We’ve been called “picky eaters,” “pretentious,” and just had people try to convince us that eating meat is good for us. Very few things are more uncomfortable on a date than having a suitor or romantic interest try to shove beef negimaki down your throat after you tell them that you’re vegan or vegetarian. And it’s even worse when you have to factor in the ignorant comments about vegetarian living.
3. Vegan singles and vegetarian singles often face the exact same issues. Vegetarians and vegans occasionally don’t see eye to eye, but the truth is that they can always bond on the facepalm-worthy actions of meat eaters who don’t know better. And, they often can refer one another to a good restaurant or two for those first date times. This makes a typical vegetarian single more likely to want to reach out to other people who prefer to avoid meat and dairy.
4. Veggie dating just takes so much of the guesswork and pressure off of dating. Dating a carnivore is going to end up with an occasional squabble when it comes to food, restaurant venues, and even etiquette. No vegetarian wants to be rejected because of their taste in food, or because they feel like they are being pressured into eating or drinking things they don’t want to. No one wants to feel judged based on their lifestyle decisions, so veggie dating often is a good solution to that problem.
5. Most of the stereotypes that people have about vegetarians are wrong. Seriously, dating meat eating singles means that you are going to hear a million stereotypes about your lifestyle. Some of them are just a little off, while others are so out of line that it’s kind of painful to think that others actually thing vegetarians are like that. The more you hear about them, the more you will realize that a large part of being a vegetarian single is dispelling those kinds of myths. (Really, we don’t all wear patchouli!)
Being vegan or vegetarian does not mean that you have to give up on love, nor does it mean that dating has to be an excruciating process. It only means that you will likely want to meet others with a similar outlook on life as yours.
